Poços de Capelas – Natural Swimming Area:

One of the most notable bathing spots near Capelas is the natural ocean pool formed by volcanic rock. When the sea is calm, this area becomes a refreshing and scenic place to enjoy a swim. The dramatic lava formations surrounding the pools create an authentic Azorean coastal atmosphere.

Praia dos Fenais da Ajuda – Rocky Bathing Spot:

Not a sandy beach, but an accessible ocean-entry point located a short drive from Capelas. The coastline here offers volcanic rock platforms and ladders into the water, perfect for a quick dip or some quiet sunbathing.

Santa Bárbara Beach (Ribeira Grande):

The closest large sandy beach to Capelas, Santa Bárbara is renowned for its long stretch of dark volcanic sand and excellent surfing conditions. It’s ideal for a full beach day with swimming, sunbathing, or surf lessons. This is one of São Miguel’s most popular sandy beaches.

Praia de São Vicente Ferreira – Coastal Bathing Zone:

A pleasant nearby bathing area with flat volcanic rock platforms and typically calmer water. It’s a great option if you prefer easy, structured access to the sea without waves crashing on cliffs.

Capelas Coastal Cliffs & Lava Shoreline:

The coastline in Capelas is rugged, dramatic, and shaped by ancient volcanic activity. While not suitable for traditional beach use, it offers excellent walking paths, ocean views, and perfect spots for nature photography. The raw beauty of the cliffs adds a special charm to the area.
