By buying a typical souvenir, you bring home a piece of Calheta.
The town of Calheta, Madeira, is renowned for its white rum, known locally as "Aguardente", one of the best on the island.
It is possible to visit one of the last rum factories, Engenho da Calheta, or simply go to one of the town's bars to drink and discover Poncha.
Poncha is a traditional Madeira aperitif made from rum (or brandy), from sugar cane cultivation, and fresh fruit.
Other typical Madeira souvenirs can also be brought back from Calheta:
- Madeira wine: a fortified wine made from grapes grown in the volcanic soil of Madeira. It comes in different styles, from dry to sweet, and is aged to perfection.
- Madeira embroidery: household linen and clothing hand-embroidered by skilled artisans. These embroideries often feature intricate and colorful floral patterns.
- Cane honey: Madeira cane honey is a unique and tasty product, used in many local dishes and desserts. It is made from sugar cane juice and has a rich, caramelized flavor.
- Clay figurines: Madeira clay figurines are colorful and fun souvenirs, often used to decorate Christmas nativity scenes. They represent traditional characters, such as shepherds, peasants and animals.
If you have the opportunity to visit the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal, you will also find many traditional Madeira products and handcrafted souvenirs.
