Your destination offers many restaurants that provide international cuisine. However, it is possible to locate reputable restaurants that offer tasty local food.

Typical food from the region is:

  • Alpine Herb Cuisine
In the Hochkönig region, many mountain huts (“herb huts”) serve dishes made with wild alpine herbs.
Examples: nettle dumplings with braised tomatoes, herb‑paste potato soups, or herb crackers.
Also: bilberry (blueberry) dumplings with nuts, Swiss pine cream, wild sorrel, etc.
  • Regional Dairy Products
Aged mountain cheese (Bergkäse), used in local hut dishes.
Nut butter and other butter varieties made from alpine milk.
  • Traditional Austrian / Pinzgau Cuisine (from local restaurants)
At Hotel Lohningerhof, very regional products are used: fresh bread, cheese, locally produced meat, mushrooms, eggs, mountain herbs, seasonal fruits, etc.
Their menu often features dishes in the local Pinzgau style.
  • Cheese Fondue / Alpine Cheese Specialties
Some mountain huts (e.g., Schweizerhütte) host cheese fondue evenings.
Cheese specialties are highlighted in local gastronomic guides.
  • Schnaps / Distillates
Homemade schnaps and herbal liqueurs are common.
You can taste local distillates made with alpine herbs.
  • Vegetarian / Vegan Options
The Hochkönig region also offers vegetarian and vegan cuisine using regional ingredients.
Even alpine huts include vegan or herb-based dishes on their menus.
  • Desserts & Sweets
Although not exclusive to Maria Alm, you might find Salzburger Nockerl, a sweet soufflé from the Salzburg region.
Local pastries and traditional Austrian desserts like apple strudel and Kaiserschmarrn (fluffy shredded pancake) are likely available in mountain huts and local cafés.
